Author: April Allen and Shawna Unger, Cofounders, Principal Consultants
“Redirecting route…” Ever heard this with a sinking feeling as your car’s GPS fights to reconcile the ideal path to your destination? We’ve all been there — road-trip-ready, and then it hits — construction, blown tire, a tanker overturned — and you come to that dead stop, only to crawl at a snail’s pace to a random unknown exit. The trip’s early optimism is replaced with the growing dread that perhaps this trip was a bad idea after all. For many the “journey of DEI” may feel…

Austin Sturza of Onalaska was the area’s highest finisher, third in 19:38.26. On the girls side, Winlock’s Natalie Cardenas Hernandez was the runner-up in 24:45.54 and Mossyrock’s Joan Wedam took third.

MWP’s pack runs strong in Sunnyside

The Timberwolves put together an eye-opening show at Saturday’s Sun Burn Invite at South Hill Park.

All four of their varsity runners crossed the finish line inside the top-15. Hunter Brackett was the top runner, sixth in 18:22.91 while Vanson Armstrong took ninth.

Juniors Noah Gilstrap and Aiden Kampa finished 12th and 14th, respectively. The Timberwolves lone girls runner Gemma Jakubowski finished 22nd.

Rainier pieces together standout day in Olympia

The Mountaineers unleashed another reminder why they will be a team to watch for the season at Saturday’s Olympia XC Classic.

Freshman Komaire Robles was the winner in her race, clocking a time of 13:29.50 and Alexis Myers took sixth in 14:08-flat. Jazzlyn Shumate and Madison Ingram each had seventh place finishes in the junior and senior races, respectively.

Tumwater’s Alexandra Broome notched a ninth place performance in the sophomore race.

On the boys side, two of the best runners in the area ran in the front as Rainier’s Zach Hamilton (junior) and Rochester’s Gunnar Morgan (senior) placed fifth and sixth in their races.

Adjustments fuel Riverhawks to 2-0 start

Mike Christensen felt it took two drives for the Toledo High School’s football team to get “comfortable” defensively and the offense followed suit en route to a 26-13 triumph over Goldendale on Saturday afternoon at home.

It moves the Riverhawks to 2-0 heading into the final non-league game against Pe Ell/Willapa Valley in Willapa next week.

“It was a physical contest,” Christensen, the head coach of Toledo, said. “This was a matchup I want to do more of, East (versus) West. I wanted to pick three hard (non-league) games and PWV fits in that.”

After giving up a score in the first quarter, the Riverhawks started to gain momentum in the second frame behind a 28-yard burst from Carter Swofford. Then Eli Weeks launched a 68-yard touchdown pass to speedster Trevin Gale to take the lead for good.

Swofford and Weeks each registered third quarter rushing scores. Swofford finished with 147 yards while Weeks totaled over 200 offensive yards. Toledo out-gained Goldendale 366-182 and despite three fumbles, it never lost one.

“It was a good learning experience,” Christensen said.

Pirates shut out Warriors behind ground game, defense

The Adna High School football team went back in time to a previous era of football, utilizing an effective rushing attack and a defensive masterpiece to silence Cle Elum-Roslyn 42-0 on Friday night.

Beau Miller notched 138 of the Pirates’ 156 rushing yards, scoring twice on 15 carries. Both of Layden York’s touchdown passes were to Gavan Muller. Muller hauled in five catches for 80 yards against the Warriors while York went 8-for-11 throwing for 84 yards.

Backup QB Trevin Salme tossed a touchdown in three completions. Defensively, Steven O’Dell paced Adna with 12 total tackles while Miller had a sack, interception and defensive touchdown. Luke Mohney notched 8.5 tackles with a forced fumble.

The Pirates will return home to host Tenino on Friday.

Acorns turn it up in fourth quarter to edge Hyaks

A little creativity went a long way to give the Oakville-North River football team its first win of the season on Friday night, edging by North Beach 34-24 at home.

Leading 28-24 late in the fourth quarter, the Acorns (1-1) called a halfback RPO with Daniel Rodas unleashing a 49-yard touchdown pass to Konor Burnett for the final dagger. Rodas finished with eight catches for 178 yards and two scores plus his lone passing TD.

The defense played a large part in preserving the victory. After Gio Rodas threw an interception, North Beach raced down the field aiming for a pick-six, but Lewis Koser registered the saving tackle. At the two-yard line and North Beach having first and goal, Dre Kluth and Ben Kimbrel notched sacks and Daniel Rodas had a PBU on fourth and goal.

Gio Rodas found his brother Daniel for a 17-yard score in the first, then took off for a 16-yard scramble in the second. Kluth registered 17 tackles, four of them for a loss, and two sacks. Oakville-North River will host Chief Leschi next week.
