Prep football: Tigers drop OT heartbreaker for second straight year

Jon Rooklidge and the Centralia High School football team have seen this movie before.

Home opener. Low-scoring, defensive slugfest. Overtime. Week 1 last fall versus Elam was deja vu to Friday night’s Week 2 contest against R.A. Long.

“Real similar,” Rooklidge stated.

The ending had the same closing scene.

Kellan Rooklidge was a yard away from continuing the Tigers overtime possession, but the Lumberjacks came away with the stop of the night and celebrated a 21-15 OT triumph on the newly-turfed Tiger Stadium.

Centralia (0-2) walked off the field in disbelief. Senior offensive lineman David Daarud squatted with his helmet off in shock.

“The end of the game boils down to inches,” Coach Rooklidge said. “It hurts, I hurt for the kids because they laid it out on the line and came up just a hair short.”

The Tigers won the coin toss and elected to play defense first. It took R.A. Long (1-1) a handful of plays to deliver the first blow, a Jaxson Rivenes 7-yard plunge. The Lumberjacks decided to go for two, but were stuffed well short.

It set the stage for Centralia to snap a three-game skid. After a false start, quarterback Terrell Sanders took a designed QB run for eight yards. Coach Rooklidge decided to put the ball in Kellan’s hands on the fateful play.

“He’s our yardage guy,” he said. “Our quarterback counters had, for the most part, been stuffed all night.”

The Lumberjacks wrapped him up a yard short and to end a nine-game losing streak. Rooklidge was the bell cow with 19 carries for 97 yards and a 9-yard score in the second quarter that gave Centralia a 12-7 lead.

To get to overtime, the Tigers drove the length of the field and faced fourth and goal from the R.A. Long six-yard line. They trotted out senior Page Miles for a 23-yard field goal, who booted it through on a low line drive.

Just like against Elma a season ago, Centralia pounded the rock to the tune of 208 yards. Roman Cando-Young added 52 yards and Sanders chipped in 33. It out-gained R.A. Long 250-218.

“We needed three (points),” Coach Rooklidge said. “There’s no doubt in our mind (to kick the field goal). I was happy offensively and defensively.”

Despite a bounty of pre and post-snap penalties from both sides, including the first four plays of the night that featured 30 yards in calls, the Tigers were competitive throughout the contest.

Sanders capped a long drive with a 1-yard run, but a botched snap prevented a tie. R.A. Long snared the lead with 10 seconds left before half on a touchdown pass and fake PAT two-point try.

“We’re playing with a lot of guys that are at it for the first time,” Coach Rooklidge said. “We’re making strides.”

Centralia has homecoming next week and will face Foster. It closes the non-league slate of its schedule against Class 1A Tenino before opening the EvCo portion of the schedule at Black Hills.

“I saw character out there tonight,” Coach Rooklidge said. “We’re in games and it looks different.”

Winlock can't keep up against Ilwaco

The Winlock football team had an early lead against Ilwaco on Friday, but once the Fishermen kicked it into gear, there was no stopping them.

Ilwaco ended the game with seven unanswered touchdowns, handing Winlock a 58-12 loss at home.

Landon Cline opened the scoring by finding Jaxyn Pelagio on a one-yard pass, and the two connected again from 27 yards out to put Winlock up 12-6 after one.

Ilwaco got going offensively, though, as Corbin Johnson scored four straight touchdowns, upping his total to five on the day and giving Ilwaco a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

James Cusson led the Cardinals with 67 yards on 18 attempts, while Pelagio finished with three catches for 30 yards and the two touchdowns. Cline finished 5 for 14 through the air with 51 passing yards.

Winlock (0-2) will look for its first win on the road at Toutle Lake next week.

Mountaineers top Ravens to get in the win column

The Rainier football team earned its first win of the season on Friday, as the Mountaineers topped Raymond-South Bend 43-34.

Rainier had big plays in all three phases, as Dorien Cano ran for two touchdowns, while Hunter Howell logged a rushing and receiving touchdown.

Jayden Alegarbes returned a kick for a long touchdown and Keagin Howell scooped up a loose ball and returned it for a defensive score.

The Mountaineers (1-1) will be back on the road next Friday when they head to Morton to face MWP.

Tumwater rolls to another blowout win

The Tumwater football team had no problem dispatching its opponent again on Friday, as the Thunderbirds walked away with a 56-6 win over Bainbridge.

It’s the T-Birds second straight win with that scoreline, and once again, things came easy for them on the ground.

Peyton Davis ran for 115 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while Tyler Briscoe added 82 yards and got into the end zone on one of his nine carries. Cash Short took both of his short runs for touchdowns, and Mattias Rodriguez, Parker Berry, and Jaylin Nixon also hit paydirt.

Jaxon Budd went a perfect 5 for 5 through the air for 89 yards. David Malroy came down with two of those passes for 39 yards, while Jake Dillon also caught two balls for 26 yards. Nixon caught the other completion, recording 24 yards receiving.

Xavier Bunn came away with an interception on defense, while Mehki Richardson and Mikah Sederberg both blocked punts to give the T-Birds a boost on special teams.

The T-Birds (2-0) will hit the road for the first time next week, as they’ll head to Eastlake High School in Sammamish to face the Wolves.

Brumfield leads Bearcats past Cougars

One week after scoring five touchdowns in a win, W.F. West’s Gage Brumfield had another stellar night on Friday, as the senior scored three touchdowns to lead W.F. West to a 21-13 win over 3A Capital.

The Cougars got on the board first, but Brumfield responded with the first of two rushing touchdowns to tie the game at seven.

In the second, Brumfield found Ross Kelley for a 25-yard score through the air before finding the end zone again with his legs before halftime.

The W.F. West defense gave the Capital passing attack trouble all night, as the Cougars connected on less than half of their passing attempts (17 of 38) and threw for under 200 yards on the night.

Brumfield finished with 226 yards through the air and 86 on the ground, while Kelley finished with 63 receiving yards on four catches. Grady Westlund also caught four passes for 80 yards, and Tucker Land hauled in seven passes for 64 yards.

W.F. West (2-0) will be at home for the first time next Friday, when 3A Timberline will come to town.

T-Wolves pull away late to top Cougars

The Morton-White Pass football team pulled away late in White Swan on Friday, as the Timberwolves ended the game with three straight touchdowns to seal a 50-26 win.

The T-Wolves (2-0) led by 12 in the third, but the Cougars scored two straight touchdowns to tie the game at 26 in the fourth.

Morton-White Pass didn’t flinch, though, as Logan Mays broke free for a 40-yard touchdown to give the T-Wolves the lead, and Kohen Ingalsbe ran for two touchdowns later in the quarter to seal it.

“I think there was just a sense of urgency finally,” Morton-White Pass coach Lee Metcalf said. “Once things start snowballing on you, it’s kind of hard to get it back. But they were able to figure it out and turn the tides on them.”

Ingalsbe finished the day with three total touchdowns, including a 70-yard kickoff return after White Swan’s first touchdown of the game. He tallied 121 yards on just 12 carries and caught a pass for 10 yards.

Mays got into the end zone twice and ran for 141 yards on just 10 carries, and Judah Kelly also hit paydirt twice. As a team, the T-Wolves tallied 394 yards, including 240 on the ground.

“We were fairly crisp for the most part,” Metcalf said. “We’re making strides. Every week, we’ll just try to keep grinding and try to get better.”

Morton-White Pass will be back home next week, as Rainier will come to Morton for a Week 3 matchup.
