Adna wins three of five in Freeman Tournament

The Adna volleyball team attended the Freeman Volleyball Tournament this past weekend, and the Pirates took three of the five three-set matches they played.

In pool play, Adna lost to Lakeland (Idaho 4A) 19-25, 25-20, 6-15, before beating 4A Lewis and Clark 25-14, 25-22 and 4A Moses Lake 25-23, 25-22.

In bracket play, the Pirates let one slip away against Lewiston (Idaho 5A), falling 25-23, 11-25, 15-17, before ending the weekend with a 25-12, 25-17 win over Timberlake (Idaho 4A).

“The tournament was a great experience for the team to see what we need to do to get to the next level of play,” Adna coach Wendie Dotson said.

The Pirates will head east again this upcoming weekend, when they’ll take on Brewster and Manson on Saturday at Manson High School.

Vikings outlast Loggers in five-set thriller

MOSSYROCK — It was about as close as a volleyball match could be on Monday night in Mossyrock, where the Vikings outlasted the visiting Onalaska Loggers to come away with a 20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 19-25, 15-11 win in a non-league affair.

The Vikings had to adjust on the fly after dropping the first set of the game, as an injury forced veterans to play out of position and brought younger players into the game off the bench.

Despite that, Mossyrock was able to rally and win the next two sets to take a 2-1 lead.

“It just shows when there’s a team effort, how much you can come together,” Mossyrock coach Alex Nelson said with a smile. “It was all of them contributing … I’m very proud of this team.”

In those two sets, the Vikings gained some momentum on a few blocks, and they became more efficient and aggressive from the service line as the game went on.

“They were playing safe in the beginning,” Nelson said. “The block was the first thing to come alive … It gave us a little more energy.”

Onalaska battled back to take Set 4 and score the first three points of the fifth and final set, but Mossyrock went on a 10-2 run to take control late.

The Loggers are a very young team, as they have just three sophomores and six freshmen, but many of them got extended playing time at the varsity level last season.

Onalaska coach Susan Gordon acknowledged that, and she was disappointed that they allowed such a long run in one of the game’s most critical moments.

“Yeah, we’re freshmen, we’re sophomores,” Gordon said. “That’s not an excuse anymore. We’re here, we’re gonna play, or this is what’s gonna happen.”

Onalaska was able to get back within three later in the set, but Mossyrock never let it get any closer than that.

“There’s been huge growth in them (from last fall),” Gordon continued. “And that’s why I’m done saying ‘learn from this.’ No, you learned. Get over it and get it done … They’ll take it and move forward.”

Emalie Jacoby finished with 44 digs, 16 kills, and six aces, while Capri McGraw tallied 17 digs and five aces. Faith Hammer had five solo blocks, while Sommer Hammer logged six kills. Braelyn Babb dished out 27 assists.

While this game was a non-league matchup, these two teams will meet again in C2BL play on Oct. 22 in Onalaska. The rematch could have big postseason implications, as the Loggers made the district tournament last fall, and the Vikings are eager to prove that regardless of classification, they can continue to have success.

Over the past seven years, at 1B and 2B, Mossyrock has earned a top-three finish at the state tournament.

“We can compete at any level,” Nelson said. “But last year, we improved a lot. And we needed to in order to get where we were at the end of the season. This year, I feel the same way. We need to have the same level of improvement.”

Chesney Schultz tallied 13 kills, five aces, and a pair of blocks, while Adyson Barrows and Erin Cournyer added six kills each. Barrows led the Vikings with six aces. Mossyrock’s stats are incomplete as the stat keeper had to operate the scoreboard after the Mossyrock injury.

The Loggers (1-1) will look to get back in the win column at Rochester on Wednesday, while the Vikings (2-0) will hit the road for the first time when they travel to Toutle Lake for another non-league contest on Thursday.

Loggers, Warriors battle to draw in non-league match

Onalaska’s Randi Haight found the back of the net for the equalizing goal in the 78th minute that ended up being the final tally in a 2-2 draw with Rochester on Monday night at home.

The Loggers (2-2-1) allowed multiple goals, but didn’t take a loss for the first time this season. Kiayah Sandridge tied the match at 1-1 in the 37th minute. They finished with nine total shots on the night with keeper Emily Hicks notching seven saves.

Kenna Pratt lit up the scoreboard for the Warriors (0-2-1) in the 20th minute to put them in front early. McKenna Bocook gave them the lead in the 66th minute, then an early-season theme of letting up late goals bit them once again.

Rochester finished with 13 shots in the game. It returns to the field on Wednesday against another C2BL program in Toledo while Onalaska faces the other local 1A Evergreen foe Tenino on Tuesday.

Wolves fire lowest team score in Martin's tenure

Ignited by a nine-hole 38 from Phoenix Flores and the rest of the varsity lineup under 50, the Wolves nudged past Shelton 209-230 on Monday afternoon at Tumwater Valley Golf Course. Flores was the runner-up behind the Highclimbers’ Austin Covert.

Jack Casler and Kendell Robertson each fired a 41 while Ethan Badger notched a 43 to round out the Wolves low-four. Logan Stallings scored a 44 and Landon Echols registered a 46.

Black Hills will return to the course at Highland to face Aberdeen.

Bail set at $150,000 for man accused of raping a woman in Onalaska on Saturday

Bail is set at $150,000 for a man accused of raping an intoxicated woman in Onalaska on Saturday.

Daniel Glenn Price, 36, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail just after 11 p.m. on Sept. 14 after deputies with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a sexual assault at a residence in Onalaska, according to court documents and jail records.

The victim was reportedly at a friend’s house drinking alcohol with her friend and Price, who was her friend’s roommate, Saturday evening. The friend later told law enforcement that Price was “being very ‘flirty’ with (the victim)” and “became ‘touchy’ with the victim, as in hugging and just unneeded touching,” despite the victim “not responding to the flirty comments” and asking Price to stop touching her, according to charging documents. The friend advised that the victim “appeared very uncomfortable with Daniel touching her as they had just met that night,” according to court documents.

The victim reportedly stated that she needed a cigarette, and Price responded by saying he had a cigarette roller in his bedroom.

Price reportedly invited the friend to join them in his bedroom while they smoked, but she declined, leaving to do laundry at the victim’s nearby residence.

When the victim did not return to her residence later that evening, her husband reportedly “became concerned” and went to the friend’s house to check on her, according to court documents.

The friend reportedly “alerted” the victim’s husband “that Daniel was attempting ‘something’ with (the victim),” according to court documents.

The victim’s husband reportedly went to Daniel’s bedroom door, which was closed, and heard the victim yell “no” before he opened it. He reportedly observed the victim, who was crying, on the floor in a disheveled state. The victim’s husband reportedly “started questioning what was happening, and (the victim) denied anything voluntary and Daniel had a ‘shocked’ look on his face,” according to court documents.

The victim was reportedly “very emotional” and alleged “Daniel had forced himself on her and she continuously told him to stop.”

A deputy who interviewed the victim noted she was intoxicated, “emotional and very difficult to speak to,” but said she “had a good recollection of what had occurred,” according to court documents.

She alleged that Price sexually assaulted her and advised that “she told Daniel to ‘stop’ and ‘no’ numerous times, with no response from him,” according to court documents. She reported that “she felt too weak to defend herself, so continued to tell him to stop.”

When questioned, Price allegedly “continuously advised that he did not touch (the victim) and that they were only in his room to smoke,” and said the victim “stayed standing by the door the whole time,” according to court documents.

Price was charged Monday, Sept. 16, in Lewis County Superior Court with one count each of second-degree rape and indecent liberties. Each charge is a class A felony punishable by up to life in prison.

Price’s bail was set at $150,000 over the weekend, which prosecutors asked Judge Joely Yeager to maintain Monday during Price’s preliminary hearing in Lewis County Superior Court.

Yeager granted the prosecution’s bail request, citing community safety concerns and recent domestic violence convictions on Price’s record.

“I’m going to grant the state’s request, not necessarily because of the domestic violence history, though that is a factor … The main reason is concern for community safety. These are violent offenses with a maximum penalty of up to life,” Yeager said during Price’s hearing on Monday.

Arraignment is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 19.
